Zanesville Monument Co., at 3300 Maysville Pike, is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information, call (740) 297-8568 or go to www.zanesvillemonument.com.ZANESVILLE -- Standing among a section of simple to ornate monuments, Michael Williamson II and Bobbi Spofford show off a sample of how people can leave enduring legacies."We stand out," Spofford said. "We're with our clients every step of the way from the design to the foundation. This is the longest lasting investment you can make."On April 4, business partners Williamson and Spofford opened Zanesville Monument Co., at the corner of Maysville Pike and Panther Drive. Each has customer service experience, which they said is the focus of their business, and Williamson also has familial ties to the vocation."My father worked in the coal mines, then started at Logan Monument," Williamson said. "Then he started Quality Monument . I was with them for several years, and Bobbi and I decided to open up a business here. I have extensive product knowledge from the setting of stone to general layout designs.""His family has helped us out a lot," Spofford added. "When my sister passed away three years ago, his family did the monument, and I can relate to what people are going through."The company offers an array of services including monument sales and installation, cemetery lettering, foundation installation and replacements, cremation niches, granite vases, pet markers, in-house and external financing and a veterans discount."I feel strongly about our veterans, so we give a 15 percent discount to veterans," Williamson said.A major service Williamson and Spofford are stressing is the importance of pre-planning."I've heard people say 'I wish we would have done this,' and there have been family disputes about arrangements," Williamson said. "Taking care of the pre-need helps take the burden off the family."They said another advantage to pre-planning is paying today's prices for monuments, which are sure to increase throughout the years. With their emphasis on customer service, Williamson and Spofford are focused on giving their clients exactly what they want."We're here to please people with simple to elaborate designs," Williamson said. "We want to appeal to a broad view of customers. People can spend anywhere from $500 to $25,000."Williamson said upright monuments like cremation niches have become more commonplace as cremation has become a major trend. Other trends Spofford has noticed include memorial benches, large family monuments surrounded by smaller stones, and more elaborate designs."We can scan a picture and have it laser etched into the stone," she said. "It's evolved from just blasting the name into the stone. You can put an entire scrapbook of someone's life on there. And you can pick what color granite you want and where it comes from."The business has been open only for a matter of weeks, but Spofford said she is pleased with the positive response so far."I believe the company can be a strong memorial provider in Zanesville and the surrounding counties if we stick with our values and customer service goals," she said.

"I look forward to being successful in the area, but more importantly, providing service in the area," Williamson added. "Hopefully the pre-need will catch on so we can make it easier on the families."
